Al terminar un curso virtual una compañera, profesora universitaria de muchos años, que fungió como tutora virtual, me dijo que no creía mucho en esta metodología.

Al revisar los avances de los estudiantes se puede ver que los resultados cuantitativos son muy altos, pero queda la sensación de que los avances cualitativos son muy bajos. ¿Aprenden los estudiantes virtuales igual que los estudiantes presenciales? Mi compañera de labores docentes lo duda.

La discusión la hemos tenido con otras personas. Un gran amigo que conoce la metodología virtual, que es estudiante de maestría virtual, tutor de pregrado en modalidad virtual, autor y par de módulos virtuales, entre otras tareas, me dice que en la virtualidad los estudiantes no aprenden igual que los presenciales, quienes aprenden más.

La educación virtual preocupa. Estamos en el boom de la virtualidad. Las universidades están abriendo cientos de programas virtuales cada semestre. Los estudiantes ven con otros ojos esta modalidad, y en pocos años, 5 tal vez, tendremos los primeros profesionales totalmente virtuales. Claro, su título no dirá que son profesionales virtuales ya que eso rebajaría el nivel, se cree, pero en la práctica lo serán. La pregunta es: ¿serán mejores profesionales que los profesionales presenciales?

Revisando algunos temas sobre filosofía de la educación me encuentro con la siguiente definición: la educación es la acción recíproca de ayuda al perfeccionamiento humano, ordenado intencionalmente a la razón, y dirigido desde ella, en cuanto que promueve la formación de hábitos éticamente buenos (Altarejos 2000).

En el marco de la educación virtual ¿Se logra el perfeccionamiento humano?, ¿Forma hábitos éticamente buenos?, ¿Es una acción recíproca entre docente – tutor y estudiante?, ¿La educación virtual refleja la acción, y la acción bidireccional, que implica la educación?  ¿Se logra conversar, hablando de comunicación educativa, en torno a los problemas reales que rodean al estudiante?

Pienso que estamos aprendiendo. El problema es que estamos aprendiendo en la experiencia de los estudiantes virtuales, y en los próximos profesionales. Las fallas del sistema se ven reflejadas superficialmente ahora, pero afectarán las acciones y decisiones de los profesionales en ejercicio de las próximas décadas.

Es urgente tomar medidas que posibiliten el mejoramiento continuo y el alcance de la calidad. Los estudiantes lo merecen, la academia lo necesita, la sociedad lo requiere.
